Ch 4 post 3

Re discussion of english class requirements on pp 115-116: one of the strengths of the AP tests are that the AP courses must all cover the same pieces of literature, with some teacher choice for additional selections. Is this something that should be considered for younger students? This could eliminate basals and some teacher choice.

  1. I would argue that a strength for this type of reading list would be the discussions outside of class that could occur. If every fourth grader read a group of the same texts, the opportunity for discussion and reference would be much more meaningful peer to peer. Additionally, comparisons could be made from other grade levels because of an “expected” knowledge of certain texts or topics from previous years. The quantity suggested on his list doesn’t seem impossible but could be challenging and require careful planning.

  2. I agree that fitting these English requirements into reading would be challenging, although I feel that they would be beneficial for the students. I particularly like the idea of the newspaper, magazine and online articles being integrated into the standards. It would be nice to fit these types of articles into primary reading lessons. Storytown is filled with short stories and poems, but I feel that it is lacking the nonfiction piece that children seem to connect with.

  3. Seems like using high-interest leveled novels in a Literature Circle setting would do the trick!
